Yes, Neil Patel’s website ranks for 477K keywords. We are in a super competitive niche – digital marketing. So, how did he do it?

The first step is proper keyword research.

As most of the marketers, what you do is go to tools like Ubersuggest or keyword planner and type in the word say SEO. You get a list of keyword suggestions.

And then you start inserting

it into your website or begin creating the content around them.

The process is like gambling – there is no guarantee that you will rank for these keywords. And in the worst case, you may not generate any leads or revenue.

Here’s is a 5 step process that helped Neil Patel rank for 477K keywords.

Step 1: Focus on the pages that drive revenue

If you are ranking for the page that’s not generating any revenue, then you are probably wasting your time.

So, you can use Google Analytics. You can set goals in Google Analytics.

Now, look for the pages that have more conversions.

Of course, your list may be topped with check-out page, which means you have to focus on:

1. Product/Service Page

2. Content Page

Step 2: Log into Google Search Console

Once, you have the list of those pages, take those URLs and look them in Google Search Console.

To do this, click on Search Traffic -> Search Analysis.

Click on the Pages Option. Now look for the list of pages that we made in the previous step.

Select the page and Click on Queries. It will list the specific terms that generate traffic to our high converting pages.

Now download the list in CSV. Once you open it sort it by the number of impressions. You can edit the title of your page and meta tags as per the few top keywords.

Also, you can add some more keywords that you should be ranking for in the list, and edit the page content accordingly.

Now select the “position” column and create the filter for it by clicking on “sort & filter button.”

Now unselect the number 1,2 and 3. And also the numbers more than 11.

So, now you have the list of keywords for which you are showing up on 1st page but not on the first three positions.

Take all the keywords relevant to your page and blend them in by creating/editing the content around it.

Over time, you will slowly climb for the keywords that bring in more revenue.

Step 3: Add in related keywords

Now lets, identify the relevant keywords to the ones that you are already ranking.

To do this, log in to Google Search Console and look at the top 10 keywords that you rank. And go to Search Traffic -> Search Analytics.

Make a list of top 10 non-brand keywords.

Go to Google Search, and look for each of the keywords manually and scroll to the bottom where it says, “related keywords.” The beauty of this list is that these keywords are already related to the one you are ranking. These keywords are more comfortable to rank.

For 1 top keyword, you have eight additional keywords; for 1000 such keywords, you will have 8000 other keywords.

Now be careful while integrating them, you want to add them only when it makes sense, don’t spam.

Step 4: Go after the low-hanging fruit

Most marketers, don’t notice the traffic difference between the pages on the site that rank on Page 2 compared to the ones ranking on Page 1.

Now, let’s go to that CSV report again and filter the list for the positions more than 11. Perform a Google search for each keyword, and compile a list of pages that are ranking above you.

Now look for the backlinks for those pages; you can use a tool like Ahrefs. Now get in touch with those backlink providers and beg them to add your website. Here’s an email template you can use.

“Hey [Insert website owners name],
I noticed that you are linking to [insert the competing web page] from [insert the URL of on their website linking to the competition]. Did you know that the page you are linking to isn’t the best resource for your website readers?
It’s missing [insert multiple points on what that competing page lacks].
If you want to provide an even better experience for your website readers, you should consider linking to [insert your URL that you want to rank higher] as it has [insert why your web page better than the competition].

Cheers,
[Insert your name]”

You should be getting 3% to 5% of the people you emailed, ready to link you. If you can’t get to at least 3%, it means that you either didn’t do a good job modifying the email template or your page sucks compared to your competition.

Step 5: Attract buyers before they are ready to buy

Have you ever used Google Trends Tool?

What it does is, it shows you what your customers are typing in weeks or even months before they become customers.

For instance, let’s say you are working for one of the customers who sell bread oils. Now type in “beard oil” into Google Trend, and you will see what customers are typing in before they become customers. Now to attract more customers and build brand loyalty with people who may be interested in beard oil products, you could create content around the best beard oil or flannel outfits that go well with beards.

And if you want to figure out what products to create to upsell my beard oil customers, perform the same search on Google Trend but use a positive number such as “2 weeks.”

Based on the data, you can consider offering beard balm as an upsell as there seems to be a strong correlation.

And yes, with Google Trends, you could also geotag your results.

Creating the content on new topics gives no guarantee that a new page on your website will rank for competitive terms. But if you take the web pages that already have the traction, you could improve them using the techniques described above.

When you are going after new terms, don’t forget to use Google Trend as it will help you gain the right type of traffic (plus there are numerous changes that your competition isn’t doing it).
