Need Help With Messenger Campaign Testing

Running 3 different ad creatives at $11/day each, all set up for Messenger messages.
It’s been about 2.5 days and I’ve gotten 37 link clicks at around $1.49 CPC… but not a single message has come through.

The ads are set to send an automatic welcome message when someone clicks “Send Message,” so I don’t get how I’ve had 37 clicks and not one conversation started or inbox thread showing.

Has anyone run into this before? Could the message setup be broken even though it previews fine?

Possible Reasons & Fixes

1. Clicks Might Be “Link Clicks,” Not Messenger Clicks

  • Check your click type breakdown in Ads Manager. If your objective is set to Traffic or you're using a destination URL instead of Message Objective, people may be clicking the ad’s headline or image, not the “Send Message” button.

  • Fix: Use the Messages objective, not Traffic or Engagement, and ensure your CTA is strictly “Send Message.”

2. Broken or Misconfigured Message Template

  • Even if the welcome message preview looks fine, the actual JSON or template could be invalid or unpublished.

  • Fix:

    • Go to Ad Level → Message Template → Edit.

    • Re-publish the message template.

    • Look for red warnings or broken fields inside the template builder.

    • Try recreating it from scratch if it seems glitchy.

3. Messenger Setup Bug (Meta Glitch)

  • Occasionally, Messenger campaigns get affected by preview-only bugs where the “Send Message” works in preview but fails in live mode.

  • Fix:

    • Duplicate the ad (don’t just edit).

    • Recreate it with a fresh template.

    • Try using a Different Message Template Type (e.g., start with quick replies instead of text only).

4. User Privacy Settings or Bot Blocking

  • Some users might click the button but have restricted message permissions, or block bot interaction immediately after clicking.

  • This is common, especially if:

    • Your ad copy isn’t clear it opens Messenger.

    • The opening message feels automated.

  • Fix:

    • Clarify in the ad copy: “Clicking will open Messenger where we’ll respond instantly.”

    • Make the welcome message more human and engaging, not bot-like.

5. Facebook Page Permissions or Connection Issue

  • If the Page isn't correctly connected to the ad account or Messenger is not properly enabled, it can silently fail.

  • Fix:

    • Go to Business Settings > Pages > Connected Assets and ensure the page is connected to the correct ad account.

    • Go to your Page settings → Advanced Messaging → Check if the Messenger platform is active.

How to Test Properly

  1. Run a test ad with your own profile (using Facebook’s “preview in Messenger” feature).

  2. Use Page Inbox or Meta Business Suite to monitor conversations — sometimes the old Inbox UI doesn’t show “automated” conversations until a reply is made.

  3. Turn on notifications for new messages in Meta Business Suite.

Recommended Metrics to Monitor

  • Messaging Conversations Started (not just link clicks)

  • Button Clicks on Messenger

  • CTR (All) vs CTR (Link Click-Through)

  • Blocked/Deleted Messages (low-key signal of bad experience)
