Recently installed the GTM tag on a Shopify website using Customer Events. The thing is, it was installed in a sandbox—apparently a technology from Shopify that I’m not familiar with.

When I test the actions using the Shopify Pixel Helper, all actions and values are reported correctly, and they are also correctly reported in GA4.

The issue is that Google (Tag Assistant and Google Ads) does not recognize the tag as being installed on the site. I configured the conversion actions in Google Ads through GA4, but Google Ads shows the warning “Conversions – Missing Google Tag.”

So far, Google Ads is tracking view_item, add_to_cart, and begin_checkout, but no purchase event has been recorded yet.

My question is: does the “Missing Google Tag” warning affect ad delivery?

The “Missing Google Tag” warning in Google Ads does not stop ad delivery, but it can affect conversion tracking accuracy and optimization (especially for tCPA or tROAS). Since you’re using Shopify’s sandboxed Customer Events with GTM, Google can’t detect the tag directly—even though it’s working via GA4.

To fix it, consider:

  • Adding a basic Google Tag (gtag.js) in the <head> outside the sandbox for verification.
  • Ensuring the purchase event is firing in GA4 and properly imported into Google Ads.
  • Your ads will still run, but full optimization might be delayed until purchases are tracked.
