Honestly, both Manual Placement and Advantage+ (automatic) Placement have their place, depending on your goals and how much control you want.

In my experience:

Advantage+ Placement (Automatic) usually performs better for leads, messages, and sales—especially if you're optimizing for volume and letting Meta's algorithm do its thing.

  • Lower CPAs and CPMs are common because Meta finds the cheapest, most efficient placements across Facebook, Instagram, Audience Network, and Messenger.

  • Great if you’re okay with Meta shifting budget dynamically and you want faster learning + reach.

Manual Placement works best when:

  • You know exactly where your audience hangs out.

  • You’re running brand-heavy creatives or specific formats (e.g., Stories only).

  • You want to avoid certain placements like Audience Network (which can bring low-quality traffic or bot leads).

Where I’ve seen the best performance:

  • Messages campaigns → Advantage+ Placements usually win, but I disable Audience Network to avoid bot clicks.

  • Leads → If you're using Instant Forms, Advantage+ still wins. For website leads, Manual can help control the landing page experience (e.g., avoiding in-app browsers).

  • Sales → Start with Advantage+, then refine based on where purchases are happening (via breakdown reports).

Tip:
Start with Advantage+ placements for better cost efficiency and scale. Move to Manual only if you notice bad placements hurting performance or if you want tighter control over where your brand appears.
