Totally get the frustration — not being able to split-test individual assets in Performance Max can be a pain. But there are some solid workarounds that help you figure out what’s actually working.
The best approach is to treat asset groups like test buckets. Duplicate the group and change just one variable (like a headline, image, or video). Let both run and compare performance at the group level — it’s not a perfect A/B test, but you’ll get directional insights.
Also, check inside your campaign under Assets → View Details. Meta labels each asset as “Best,” “Good,” or “Low.” It’s not super detailed, but if something’s marked “Low,” swap it out. Double down on “Best” performers.
Another tip: create separate asset groups by creative theme — one group for UGC-style videos, one for clean brand graphics, one with strong text-only formats. Then watch which group drives the most conversions in your campaign insights.
And if you want cleaner, creative testing, run it outside of PMax first (like in YouTube or Discovery campaigns), find the winning ads, then move them into PMax.
Hope that helps!
