Just started seeing these come up in, here’s what I know so far if you’re wondering how AI Mode Ads fit into your Google Ads strategy.
So, What Exactly Is “AI Mode”?
It’s Google’s way of inserting your ads directly into the AI-generated answers in the new Search Generative Experience (SGE). These are not traditional Search or Shopping placements, they're embedded inside conversational search responses. Think of a user asking “What’s the best skincare for sensitive skin?” and seeing an AI-crafted list... your ad shows up within that list.
Right now, it’s experimental and limited to the U.S. in English, but it’s clearly the direction Search is heading.
How Do You Get In?
There’s no manual switch or AI Mode toggle, but Google looks for specific campaign elements before making you eligible:
Broad Match keywords are required (no phrase/exact match targeting)
You must be using AI-driven bidding and automation (like PMax or Smart Bidding)
Product feeds need to be fresh and clean if you're using Shopping
AI Max for Search campaigns also qualify (this is still in beta though)
So in short: if you’re running PMax, Broad Match + Smart Bidding, and up-to-date product feeds, you’re already in the pool.
Key Features and Behavior
Shows up on both desktop and mobile
Ad formats include text-based Search Ads and product-based Shopping Ads
Feeds off natural-language queries typed by users into the AI Search bar
Ads look native to the AI-generated results, not like side banners
What You Need to Watch
No direct reporting for “AI Mode” (yet), can’t filter these placements directly in the UI
Your product titles and meta descriptions matter more than ever, they influence whether AI sees your product as a match
There’s no way to “bid more” just for AI Mode, it's controlled by Google’s machine learning based on relevance and quality
This is Google prepping for an AI-first future. If your setup isn’t ready (still stuck on Exact Match + manual bidding), you’re going to miss traffic as more queries are answered in AI snippets.
Also: Gen Z users are already using AI to search. If your ads aren’t showing in those environments, your brand visibility drops off a cliff.
